Treebeard was wrong

Sunday, October 24th, 2010

I reset my car’s trip computer when I left for Madison on Thursday evening and averaged 27.3 mpg on the drive up.

I reset it again when I left Madison to head back South to Champaign and averaged 27.1 mpg. There seemed to be less construction on the way back, so less time doing 55. At one point on the way up, I joked that the State of Illinois must store unused orange road construction barrels on the center stripes of I-39…

But my car wouldn’t lie to me. Going South doesn’t feel like walking downhill.

If you missed Nick Vatterott on Jimmy Fallon last night:

Love that dude. Way to go, Nick.

Unusual T.V. Watching

Tuesday, October 12th, 2010

On Sunday, I DVR’d and subsequently watched The Simpsons for the first time in at least 5 or 6 years because it was the Moneybart episode featuring a cameo by Bill James. (It was fairly entertaining.)

Now on Friday, I’ll be DVR’ing and subsequently watching Late Night with Jimmy Kimmel for the first time ever, because Nick Vatterott will be performing.

It wouldn’t surprise me in the least if Vaclav Havel were suddenly booked on the Wendy Williams show, the way things are looking.

Summoning a little snark

Here’s my attempt:

So this is how liberty dies?

To a John Williams soundtrack…

As bad as that joke was, the movie from whence it derives is much worse.

Seriously, though, congratulations to Obama and his supporters, and to all Americans who have the finest form of government ever attempted, even if it’s getting outragously big.

Another unrelated comment: didn’t the bassist from Living Colour look a whole hell of a lot like Jerry Rice?

Killed, though, for now by the UAW.

The deal-breaking concessions sounded reasonable to me.

Oh Glorious Day

Every year I look forward to a MLB team doing something horror-show awful in the offseason just for this sort of post from Dan Szymborski.

Dayton Moore’s a smart guy who’d been laying a pretty sound foundation in KC—it boggles the mind that he’d pick up a heroically incompetent pitcher like Horacio Ramirez on a guaranteed $1.8M contract.

If you missed it, last year it was the Cardinals who justifiably drew Dan’s ire in this post, which is, no kidding, the first page returned when googling ‘”Dan Szymborski” brilliant hilarious’.

Report from Abroad

Monday, December 1st, 2008

My old pal Nick’s been on a cruise ship for the past six months, providing comedy to the passengers with a group from Second City.

He recently talked the owner of a comedy club in Istanbul to let him get up on stage for some stand-up. The story is told brilliantly here.

Delightful

Tuesday, November 4th, 2008

Every Fall, there comes the season defensive statistics and a headline that Derek Jeter is, in fact, a terrible gloveman at Short.

Followed, a few minutes later, with a startled response like comment #14 on the article.

Good Material

Friday, October 17th, 2008

Who wrote his material, Jim Downey?

Later: This is pretty good material, too.

And this is downright terrifying. We could have the worst of the Johnson/Nixon era policies for the next two years. (At least. If the district were to get two Senators, it could be the rest of my life.)

Political Advertisements

If it weren’t for comics like Jim Gaffigan, Nick Vatterott, Brian Regan, TJ Miller, et. al. who keep putting out quality material, I’d be convinced that comedy peaked with season 4 of Mr. Show:

They had the formula down pat.

And from season 3, the finest latency joke of all time.

Blast from the Past

Wednesday, July 16th, 2008

I had a .wmv copy of Don Hertzfeld’s “Rejected” animated short years and years ago. I lost the disk it was on and for a long time it was difficult to find, so it’d been a long time since I’d seen it. Now it’s up on youtube and some of my colleagues at work had never seen it.

It’s a brilliant work of art, in addition to being hilarious, so if you haven’t seen it ever or recently, behold:

In other news, I’ve surfed this beach when sharks were swimming about, fins a’glintin’. Blacktips, though, and not showing off like that.
