A Little Bit of Good News

Monday, April 30th, 2007

The Post-Dispatch is reporting that Carpenter’s elbow felt fine yesterday after throwing 70 pitches at full strength on Saturday. That’s a promising improvement. It would be a huge boost if he can be in the clubhouse all season providing his leadership.

Update: From Bernie Micklasz, quoting Carp:

My elbow is doing good. I woke up Sunday, and there was no swelling, no nothing. I plan on throwing a simulated game (conditions) tomorrow, and we’ll go from there. There was no reaction. I threw 60 something pitches the other day, and there was no reaction in the elbow. Felt good. No problems. I’ll throw tomorrow, see how it feels, and go one step at a time.

Kip Wells had his third non-quality start in a row tonight and his second putrid one in a row. Skip Schumaker was a late addition in RF, replacing Scott Spiezio who was too overwhelmed with the loss of Hancock to make the start. He’s 2-3 so far, good to see Skip have a good game for the second start in a row. I’d like to see him start again tomorrow against Ben Sheets.

A Real Loss

Sunday, April 29th, 2007

I was bracing myself for bad news today. Chris Carpenter threw off the mound before yesterday’s game for the first time since going on the disabled list and I was preparing myself for news that the worst would happen—that his elbow would swell up, indicating that the problem wasn’t going away.

The news that Josh Hancock died in a car wreck last night makes that concern seem irrelevant.

My condolences to his family, to his teammates, and to all who loved him in his tragically short yet accomplished and meaningful life. He celebrated his 29th birthday less than three weeks ago.

Bernie Micklasz and b Baseball fans are writing nice things about Josh in Bernie’s Pressbox and at Viva el Birdos.

Update: I took down to the link to the Bernie’s Pressbox thread. If you’ve got a soul, stay far away from all those forums and message boards for the next few days. If you’d like to read Bernie’s kind words, just use the Bernie button.

Update 2: Look’s like I’ll be able to retire the Bernie Button soon! Good move, Bernie.

The Kelvin Jimenez Era Begins TONIGHT!!!

Friday, April 27th, 2007

Per Bernie Micklasz, Randy Keisler’s (a.k.a. Boner Stabone) been sent down to Memphis and he’ll be replaced with Kelvin Jimenez, who has pitched exceptionally well in both Spring Training and Memphis.

Walt Jocketty must have read my plea for just that move. (And fortunately, he cut Brad Thompson some slack when I recommended earlier that day that Brad Thompson (a.k.a. Wonderbrad, a.k.a. Thumbson) be the one sent down for Jimenez, who had pitched poorly in all but two appearances this season until last night, when he had all of his pitches working with excellent break.

My recommendation to call up Jimenez was phrased thusly:

I’d like to see Jimenez brought up for Keisler, go with a four-man rotation and an 8-man bullpen while we cross our fingers that Carp’s issues have cleared up with rest.

Bullpen game next week with Thompson starting.

It’s encouraging—and hopefully revealing—that the General Manager believes that Carpenter’s health allows this roster construction in the short-term.

There will be some discussion of whether calling up Jimenez over Troy Cate is the right move. To compare:

ERA   IP   R  ER HR BB  SO  GO/AO  AVG
Kelvin Jimenez  1.59  11.1 3  2  1  5   12  5.00   .233
Troy Cate       0.68  13.1 1  1  1  3   11  0.76   .191

Troy Cate is a left-handed reliever, who’s made one start on April 15th, which would have been Mike Parisi’s turn in the rotation, before returning to the ‘pen. After Parisi’s control problems his last time out, Cate will make a start in his place tonight, and Parisi will either be swapped down with one of Springfield’s other pitchers or converted to a relief pitcher, with Keisler re-assuming his role as Memphis starter. If Carp’s elbow reacts badly to his mound session scheduled for either Saturday or Sunday (I’ve heard both), Cate could be shipped up to the Lou to start, depending on how Brad Thompson looks as a starter next Tuesday against Ben Sheets.

Meanwhile, we’ll have some much-needed competition for RHRP innings with the addition of Kelvin Jimenez. Josh Hancock and Brad Thompson should be on the lookout.

Channel 101′s Corporate Brother

Wednesday, April 25th, 2007

I’d never heard of Acceptable.tv until today since I don’t watch much TV outside of live sports, Lost, and History/Discovery channel. I’ve long been a fan of Channel 101, though.

Every single one of these test pilots are brilliantly funny. The basic joke of “Superhawk” I first saw on one of the best SNL skits ever, The Whipmaster, but it’s done well.

Good to see there’s something better on VH1 than shit-tastic reality shows and “I Love the ’80s.”

This Town’s Going to Pot

Sunday, April 22nd, 2007

From this article:

A home was broken into in the 1800 block of Winchester Street in Champaign on Thursday afternoon. The burglar took an AK-47 rifle, a Smith and Wesson .357 handgun, a 30-round magazine for the AK-47 and some marijuana.

It’s Gonna Be a Long Day

Sunday, April 22nd, 2007

I’ve got two hockey games today… One at noon and another at 9pm. The sun’s shining and the temperature is heading to 80 degrees for the first time of the year. (I’m guessing the ice is going to be awful today.) I’d like to drag my lawnmower out of the shed and give it its annual oil-change and tune up and get the yard cut.

Unfortunately, I’ve got a paper to finish up for Tuesday. It seems likely that I’ll be staying up all night Monday into Tuesday working on it.

I sure like mowing the lawn, though. Might have to wait for Tuesday after work.

Post First Game: We got our asses handed to us by a team much better than we are. We’re now 1-1-1 and need to win the game tonight to avoid facing the noon team in the first round of the playoffs. I talked to one of the players on the other team afterwards and was somewhat glad to hear that we didn’t suffer the worst beating at their hands so far this season.

Update 2: The lawn’s mowed. The oil looked good in the mower and with some fresh gas, it fired up and ran beautifully. Not annual tune-up needed. Nice! I also put down some grass seed in the scars left in my lawn from the great Urbana Sidewalk Renovation of 2007. Watered it in and gave the plants in the front flowerbed a little love (in the form of water.) I’m gonna be silly busy for the next week, but will try to sneak a few hours one morning to pick up some peppers and other eatin’ plants for the back yard and a Japanese Silver Grass and some kind of shade plant for the beds in the front yard.

Update 3: I played like crap in the third game. The first period was great, I was skating the puck pretty well, defending the point well, and making decent passes. In the second period, I just didn’t have it. Up 6-0 and I started making stupid mental mistakes, and didn’t have the motor going. I got beat three times in one shift by the other team’s forwards and all three times we were scored upon. It didn’t get much better the rest of the way. The other team, who had only six skaters(!), took a 7-6 lead in the third period. We tied it up and then it looked like we scored the go-ahead goal with 10 seconds remaining, but apparently the goal had come off its moorings. One of our centers took a penalty in the OT for grabbing another player’s stick (that’s what I saw, at least) and we failed to score. With the OT winding down, I got beat again, badly, but our goaltender made a great save to preserve the tie.

We’re 1-1-2 for the regular season. It’s rumored that’s good enough for a three-way tie for second-place, with the tie-breaker decided by scoring differential. I’m guessing that would put us third.

I Should Be Working

Saturday, April 21st, 2007

I ♥ Alyssa Milano, who’s now a baseball blogger. My life was changed by Poison Ivy 2.

From Alyssa, I learned that Jackie Robinson’s son runs a coffee farm in Tanzania to help spur economic growth there.

Unfortunately, Samantha Alyssa and I are incompatible according to that crystal grippin’ hippy website.

(Inexplicably, Tyra Banks and I would get along really well. Not quite as compatible as I would with Kim Kardasian, though, but I think we already knew that.)

Unrelated, but holy crap is this Vader Sessions thing hilarious. Thanks to Bobovski for sending it my way. Somewhat related—I don’t think I ever linked to this before—How Star Wars Episode IV Should Have Ended. A bunch more like that are here. The LOTR one is nothing short of spectacular.

(Hat tip to Tangotiger for the links to the compatability site and the Alyssa Milano blog.)

In Today’s News-Gazette

Wednesday, April 18th, 2007

While waiting for my turn at the barber this morning, I saw this incredibly sad classified ad:

HOTTEST PROM dress of the season. Flirt by Maggie Sottero. Sapphire, size 18. Bought at M2 on January 4th. Not going to prom, paid $400 sell for $275.

I hope her former date sees that and realizes what a jerk he is. Or she—you never know with the kids these days. The backstory I’ve created in my head involves a scenario gone bad from the teen movies where the popular boy brings an unpopular girl to prom to win a bet that he can make her prom queen. Hopefully she finds a nice date and has a good time.

Also, an article about yesterday’s election results. Tom Bruno (who’s got a sweet ‘stache) sez:

I think the big losers in this election were the influences from Urbana who sought to come over here and put an Urbana stamp on the city council. It was rejected by the voters.

I admit to making modest attempts from Urbana to influence the Champaign voters into putting an anti-Urbana stamp on the city council. As an Urbana resident, I don’t have much of any ability to effect my own city government, but realize that what Champaign does, Urbana will follow.

Champaign mayor Jerry Schweighart has the right attitude:

I don’t think it’ll be a total repeal [of the smoking ban.] There will be some compromises made.

I think every sensible adult in Champaign county can agree that variety is an appropriate goal. I want to be able to go to a bar where I can watch a game, read a few papers, and smoke while I’m doing it; and I want to be able to bring non-smokers to bars where they won’t be uncomfortable. I think that enough non-smokers have expressed their appreciation during the ban that the niche market has proven itself and at least a few bar owners will maintain non-smoking environments in their establishments, and I’ll continue to patronize them sometimes. To get that kind of variety will require some kind of a compromise: I suggested they offer a slightly discounted liquor license fee for bars that commit to remain non-smoking. Offer a carrot.

I’m sure the Radio Maria bar will stay non-smoking and possibly the Seven Saints bar or whatever it’s called that’s opening up at the corner of University and Market on Friday, since both were built when the ban was in effect and didn’t have proper ventilation systems installed. Probably Ko-Fusion and a few others that I don’t go to. I could see Guido’s only allowing smoking downstairs.

Something to Think About

Wednesday, April 18th, 2007

My beloved Cardinals have a two-game series against the Giants starting Wednesday night, when we’ll send Randy Keisler out to face Matty Mo. He had a bit of luck in his last game, when the Pirates clubbed a couple of flyballs that would have left the stadium on a normal evening. If he struggles this time out, it wouldn’t surprise anyone much if he were replaced in the rotation.

The obvious contender would be Matt Ginter, a former first-rounder who’s pitched well in Memphis so far this season, with pleasingly high G:F and K:BB ratios.

Another option may be Brian Lawrence, who I optimistically named the 2007 Comeback Player of the Year back in December. (Glad I resisted the urge to pick Mike Hampton!) Brian hasn’t put up great numbers in his rehab while Rodrigo Lopez has performed well as the Rockies’ fifth starter—as a result, Lawrence will be put on waivers today.

Brian Lawrence has given up 7 home runs in fewer than 35 innings, including Spring Training (in Arizona, given). In spite of that, he’s been doing a fine job of keeping the ball on the ground. He’s had significantly more success at the major league level than Ginter, although Ginter’s pitching better right now and Lawrence’s health is an issue.

If Keisler doesn’t pitch well today and Lawrence is released, I’d be pleased to see us give Lawrence a shot at his 2007 CPOY award.

FWIW: ZiPS projects Lawrence for a 5.02 ERA, Keisler for 5.25, and Ginter didn’t receive a projection.

Meanwhile: CHONE projects Ginter for a 4.68 ERA and Keisler at 4.17, while not projecting Lawrence.

And for those who have really been paying attention, Chris Gissell is pitching and hitting pretty well for Seibu.

Thanks

I’d been looking for that!

So thanks, Jules!

Don’t Forget to Vote

Tuesday, April 17th, 2007

Tomorrow’s an important day in the city of Champaign. You can check your ballot at the county clerk’s website.

I beseech you to vote for Deb Feinen and Karen Foster for the city council.

If the two of them are elected, we should have an opportunity for a sensible compromise.

Results: Are to my liking.

What’s a Diorama?

Monday, April 16th, 2007

I think the Washington Post’s Peep Show diorama contest is a real gas.

Obligatory Simpsons clip here, now in German.

Anthony Reyes takes the mound against Ian Snell in half an hour. There’s a mild debate taking place at VeB over how good a pitcher Anthony Reyes really is and why he hasn’t been able to translate his phenomenal minor league peripherals into consistent major league success and whether he’ll ever figure out how to.

In spring training, he was mixing in a sinking fastball and having good results with it. The article talks about how his mechanics aren’t compatible with throwing strikes at the knees, that his fastball rides up in the zone and his changeup, with the same arm action, drops down to the bottom. For him to throw a 2-seam fastball, the argument goes, he’d need to use different arm action and would clearly tip his pitch. That’s not as big a problem as it sounds like, so long as he consistently gets it down around the knees or lower and that it’s got some movement to it, since we’d want batters to swing aggressively at that pitch. I think he definitely needs that weapon to consistently pitch solid outings. Changing speed isn’t enough for a starting pitcher; he needs to be able to change location up and down. You can’t rely on the hard heat at the knees, since those mistake pitches sail into the heart of the zone and get hammered. I’d like to see him work on dropping down to the side for the sinker. Give away the pitch, sure, just throw it down. If he can get batters sitting on an obvious third or fourth pitch delivery, it makes his high heat and change that much more effective for getting ahead in counts.

Good Stuff

T.J. Miller‘s newest online comedy venture is up and running: Very Bad Porn.

There’s nothing obscene there, but it’s probably not a good idea to amuse yourself with it at work. Unless your boss has a good sense of humor. I have a feeling that Nick Vatterott is back in the continental United States—hopefully he’ll make a guest appearance in one of those sometime soon.

In any case, it’s the best porn spoof since the Taint sketch from Mr. Show’s fourth season. (Link definitely not safe for work, excepting the previous exception.)

While looking for something to kill time while waiting for the workday to end so you can watch all the videos on VBP (Sana Summers was probably my favorite), try reading Rosie O’Donnell’s blog. The gal’s barely literate.

She gets mocked more lengthily in this Bill Whittle essay, if your day is really slow.

No Carp Tonight

Wednesday, April 11th, 2007

With Carpenter on the DL, Randy Keisler was called up to pitch in his stead. Derrick Goold posted an excellent scouting report/history on Keisler earlier today. Through 4 innings, he looks great, having allowed no runs on a walk and two hits while striking out three.

With the lefty Gorzelanny on the mound for the Pirates, Adam Kennedy and Jimmy Ballgame get the day off with Miles and Taguchi filling in their respective positions. Miles is 2-2 on the day, including a hit to lead off the fifth inning, which I’m watching now after getting home in the bottom of the fourth. Rolen’s dealing with some back spasms, so Scott Spiezio’s out there at the hot corner in spite of suffering from food poisoning. Taguchi’s up with a full count in the scoreless game. Blech! Both Taguchi and Miles are out on a strike-’im-out/throw-’im-out. Keisler grounds out to second to end the half inning. Top of the lineup due in the top of the sixth, Keisler will deal with the back of the order in the bottom of this frame.

Go get ‘em, Randy. Ouch. The Pirates’ number 8 hitter just hit his first home run of the season, a solo shot to make it 1-0 Pirates.

After: That game was a blast to watch. Extra innings, tension, winning the game on a sac fly played poorly at the plate. Cards win, 3-2 and now I’m keeping an eye on the scoreboard and listening to the Spanish broadcast of the Brewers vs. Marlins game, currently knotted up 2-2 in the eleventh inning. (Am also doing lit review.) Losses by the Brew Crew and Reds today would put the Cardinals in a three way tie for first place at this early stage of the NL Central race.

Absolutely unrelated, but this gave me a laugh.
